Theosophical Society
The Theosophical Society is a worldwide organisation with a presence in around 70 countries, including France. The Society was founded at the end of 1875 in New York, USA, by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Colonel Henry Steel Olcott and a number of others in search of Ageless Wisdom. In 1882, the Society's international headquarters were established in Adyar, Chennai, India, where it has remained ever since.
The Theosophical Society is a non-sectarian organisation whose objects are :
1° To form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.
2° To encourage the comparative study of religion, philosophy, and science.
3° To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in humanity.
The Theosophical Society is composed of individuals united by their adherence to these three objects. Their bond is a common search for Truth. They believe that it can be found through study, reflection and service and not imposed by authority as dogma. The Theosophical Society upholds the right of freedom of thought for all members.
The Universal Brotherhood promoted by the Theosophical Society is not a pipe dream. It is not a question of trying to reconcile beings who are so different in their diversity, by trying to level out these differences. It is a question of discovering that we are brothers because we are one, being one in the essence of the one life, and that differences are only its diverse and superficial expressions, which do not have the importance that we attribute to them.
The Theosophical Society has played an important role in bringing the spiritual wisdom of the East and of the ancient mysteries to the West, where they were little known. It has had an enormous impact on the arts and literature. Some of its former members were founders of various spiritual movements.
The Theosophical Society was created against a background of spiritual obscurantism and scientific materialism. According to Madame Blavatsky, the Theosophical Society exists to make it known that such a thing as Theosophy exists. According to her, Theosophy has several aims, but the most important are those through which it will be possible to achieve the relief of human suffering in all its forms, physical as well as moral, and she adds: we believe that the cure of moral suffering is much more important than that of physical suffering.
Although the work of the Theosophical Society in bringing Eastern Wisdom and the hidden Western mysteries to the West has been fruitful, to the extent that words like karma, reincarnation, yoga, etc. have become common terms, the work of the Theosophical Society in alleviating human suffering is still ongoing and relevant.
