The Masters by Besant, Annie
One of the great truths that modern Theosophy has brought back to the attention of the world is the existence of the Masters of the Wisdom. A Master is variously called an Adept, an Arhat, a Rishi or a Mahatma. These and similar other terms refer to some of the aspects of his true being as the 'Perfect Man'. His spiritual nature is fully awake and the rest of his faculties have been brought in complete harmony with it. All the same he is a man, but is also very much more than a man because he has attained the goal of human perfection. He is a lifting force and a necessary link in the chain of Cosmic Evolution. To some, who have found their Master and become his disciples, he is a living fact; to others he is an inspiring ideal- an ideal of Self-sacrifice, of Wisdom and of Love.
